Sanctuary Tours
Take a guided tour led by a knowledgeable docent from The Wetlands Institute. Beginning at Egret Espy Trail on 2nd avenue, the tours take you back to a time before the barrier islands were developed. You will walk through one of the few remaining maritime forests on the east coast, cross over post-ice age barrier dunes to see ancient white cedar and holly trees.
You never know what wildlife you will see! Maybe a box turtle will cross your path or, perhaps the docent will point out an endangered tree frog hiding on a low hanging branch. Watch for a variety of song birds that make the Sanctuary their summer home. And, do not be surprised if you see Black-crowned Night Herons, Glossy Ibis, Osprey or Great Egrets that are the signature of the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary.
